The Responsive Subject
18 December, 2010—27 March, 2011
Mu.Zee, Ostend, Belgium
With João Maria Gusmão & Pedro Paiva, Ian Kiaer, Guy Mees, Gyan Panchal
Curated by FormContent
Invited by MuZee to propose an exhibition and a publication in relation to the Museum’s collection, FormContent decided to focus its research on the rich inheritance left by Flemish artist Guy Mees (1935 - 2003) and to present a selection of his unique body of work in relation with works by artists Gyan Panchal, Ian Kiaer and João Gusmão & Pedro Paiva.
With The Responsive Subject we would like to question the existence of a parallel relationship between our wandering through Guy Mees’ oeuvre and the hidden corners of Gyan Panchal, Ian Kiaer and João Gusmão & Pedro Paiva’s researches on the complex and mysterious nature of representation. We would like to draw an imaginary line between Mees’ analysis of the sculptural and pictorial surface as ‘peculiar and yet lived space’, and the layered experimentation on found materials, alternative takes on display and influence of hermeticism developed by the three artists through their formally related and yet conceptually independent practices.
