TILT the Machines

Ryan O’Connor

30 March—29 April 2007

On Thursday the 29th of March, Ryan O’Connor will unveil the secret object/installation he has been working on during the past weeks. After animated discussions and a frantic development of ideas, we realised it was important to leave him with the space to test and create his project.

Since our very first meeting Ryan proposed to us a continuously growing number of ideas. Some were discarded because they were either too complicated or too expensive and others were just impossible to realize in a tight time frame. Ryan explores both of his alter egos: the performer and the object maker, proposing to show his sculptural objects but at the same time stressing the importance of making a meaningful action. The challenge is to find a common expression for these two attitudes.
For FormContent he will present a series of reinvented furniture and he will also attempt to create an installation charged with energy, transferring the value of an anarchic gesture to an object. All we know so far is that he is thinking of channelling this energy into a kinetic mobile sculpture.

The decision to collaborate on such an eclectic project is a clear commitment. It gives us the possibility to test the boundaries of our curatorial practice, whilst giving the artist an opportunity to freely reconsider his double-sided brainwork and try to resolve it in a single gesture. In this sense FormContent recognises that any discourse needs some boundaries, but our challenge is to make these boundaries mobile.
Ryan is starting research towards a different level of actions able to overcome the stagnation of institutional environments. With his raw, direct attitude, thoughts become actions as an attempt to get rid of any artistic restraints. But for the first time, for the opening of FormContent, he is trying to transfer these powerful actions in to objects. That is why FormContent is pleased to present Ryan O’Connor and his effort to TILT the machines.
